Empowering All Abilities for a Sustainable Future
Together, We Build a World That Includes and Uplifts Everyone.
GENESIS OF
SAMARTH
SAMARTH is an organization for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) established by the Centre for Community Development (CCD) in 2004. It was founded to support the socio-economic rehabilitation and inclusion of PwDs in Gajapati and is led by two visually impaired individuals.
CCD has been active in Gajapati District since 1992, working towards sustainable livelihoods and economic development for poor and marginalized communities, especially in tribal areas. In 2003, one of CCD’s staff members was paralyzed due to an accident and, despite CCD’s extensive efforts, did not recover and sadly passed away. This experience made CCD realize the larger number of people with disabilities in Gajapati who were in need of support.
CCD then began identifying the most vulnerable and in-need individuals with disabilities in the district. They recognized the need to bring PwD members together, offering them a common platform to build institutions and raising awareness about government support programs. CCD started promoting PwD organizations from the village level up to the district level. Through CCD's efforts and encouragement, SAMARTH emerged in 2004 as an independent organization dedicated to supporting PwDs in Gajapati, with its own vision, mission, objectives, and strategy.
